Plant Care Tips

🌺 Camellia Japonica Planting & Care Guide

🌿 Planting

Choose a partially shaded to shaded area with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Create a hole that is two times wider than the root ball but matches its depth. While planting, keep the top of the root ball at ground level, not above or below it. Refill with loose soil, water deeply, and add mulch around the base, leaving a few inches of space between the mulch and the stem to prevent rot.

💧 Watering

Ensure the root ball's top is set at the same level as the nearby soil when planting camellia. After establishment, reduce watering and only irrigate during dry spells or in high heat. Deep, occasional watering is better than frequent light watering—it helps build deeper roots.

🌼 Fertilizing

Feed your Camellia japonica in early spring using a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Light mid-season feeding can support continued growth, but avoid fertilizing past midsummer. Fertilizing late in the season can trigger new shoots that are sensitive to cold weather.

✂️ Pruning

Prune lightly after blooming ends, usually in late spring. Remove any weak, dead, or crossed branches to open up the plant and maintain its shape. Camellias need minimal pruning, and over-pruning can reduce flower production for the next season.
