Plant Care Tips

🌱 Planting Instructions

Red crape myrtles should be planted in full sun in well-drained soil. Place the root ball in a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball. Crape myrtle trees need loose, nutrient-rich soil to thrive. Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.

💧 Watering Tips

Ensure young crape myrtles get plenty of water to develop strong roots. Once mature, red crape myrtles tolerate drought, but deep watering during hot, dry weather is recommended. For potted trees, check soil moisture regularly.

☀️ Sunlight Needs

Crape myrtle trees perform best with 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun ensures stronger growth and more vibrant blooms. Red crape myrtles will not flower well in areas with limited sunlight.

🌿 Fertilizer Tips

Feed your red crape myrtle with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer early in spring to promote healthy growth and long-lasting blooms. Avoid fertilizing late in the season to protect tender growth from cold damage. Proper care leads to lush foliage and vivid flowers.

✂️ Pruning Guide

Prune red crape myrtle shrubs in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove weak, dead, or crowded branches to improve air circulation. Maintaining the tree’s natural form enhances overall health and bloom quality.

❄️ Winter Care

Red crape myrtle trees generally do not require winter protection in USDA Zones 7–10. In cooler zones, mulch around the base of young trees to insulate the roots. Proper winter care ensures your red crape myrtle stays healthy year after year.
