Description

🌿 Amplissimus Althea Tree Form – Large Blooms, Classic Summer Beauty

Looking for a flowering tree that makes a bold summer statement? The Amplissimus Althea Tree Form, botanically known as Hibiscus syriacus ‘Amplissimus’, is prized for its extra-large, double soft pink blooms and elegant tree shape. Also commonly called Amplissimus Rose of Sharon, this ornamental tree brings refined color and structure to gardens when many other plants slow down.

Its upright trunk and rounded canopy create a clean, polished look, while the full, layered blooms add romantic charm from mid- to late summer. If you want dependable color with minimal care, this variety delivers beautifully.

Designed to stand out without demanding constant attention.

✅ Key Features:

  • Large Double Soft Pink Blooms – Produces oversized, layered flowers with delicate veining and a rich center. Blooms appear continuously through summer, keeping your landscape vibrant.
  • Tree Form Structure – Grafted and trained into a single-trunk tree shape, offering a neat, elevated canopy that works well near entryways and patios.
  • Ideal Landscape Size – Typically grows 8–12 ft tall and 4–6 ft wide when mature. Perfect for accent planting, foundation beds, or as a focal point in smaller yards.
  • Heat & Humidity Tolerant – Thrives in USDA Zones 5–9. Performs well in full sun and adapts to various soil types once established.
  • Low Maintenance Growth – Requires minimal pruning. Drought tolerant once established and generally resistant to common pests.
  • Pollinator Friendly – Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds while deer tend to avoid it.

🌸 Why Choose Amplissimus Althea Tree Form?

Many flowering trees fade after spring — but Amplissimus Althea shines in the heat of summer. When gardens need fresh color most, its full pink blooms create a soft yet noticeable impact. The structured tree form keeps landscapes looking organized, while the large flowers add movement and texture.

Unlike shrub varieties, the tree form offers height without spreading too wide, making it ideal for tighter spaces or symmetrical plantings along walkways and driveways.

It blends beautifully into cottage gardens, formal landscapes, mixed perennial borders, and classic front yard designs.

Plant Care Tips

🌸 How to Plant, Grow & Care for an Amplissimus Althea Tree

The Amplissimus Althea Tree is a standout summer bloomer known for its full, deep double-red flowers. Commonly known as amplissimus, amplissimus rose of sharon, rose of sharon amplissimus, and amplissimus double red althea, this variety offers bold seasonal color with very little demand for care. Its upright growth and refined branching make it a strong focal plant in front-yard beds, garden borders, along walkways, or near patios where the blooms can be enjoyed up close.

Once established, it keeps a clean, rounded form with ongoing flowers that continue well into late summer.

🌿 Planting Instructions:

  • Select a full-sun location with loose, draining soil.
  • Dig the hole slightly wider than the rootball, but do not plant deeper than the original soil line.
  • Position the plant so the root flare is level with the ground surface.
  • Backfill using native soil. Firm gently, and water slowly and thoroughly.
  • Apply a light mulch layer to help retain moisture and leave space around the trunk.

🪴 Pro tip:

For the strongest color and the highest bloom count, choose a spot with direct sunlight most of the day.

💧 Watering tips

  • Keep the soil moist (not soaked) for the first few months while the roots settle.
  • Once established, water during extended dry and hot spells to support continued flowering.
  • Deep, infrequent watering promotes stronger rooting than frequent light watering.

☀️ Sunlight requirements

  • Full sun (6-8 hours) daily ensures maximum blooms and a tight plant structure.
  • Partial shade may reduce the number and fullness of flowers.

🌾 Fertilization tips

  • Feed once in early spring using a balanced Slow-release fertilizer or compost.
  • Avoid high-nitrogen lawn fertilizers nearby-they may encourage leaf growth at the expense of blooms.

✂️ Pruning Guide

  • Prune in late winter to very early spring, before new growth begins.
  • Remove any crossed, weak, or winter-damaged stems.
  • MINIMAL shaping is needed- Amplissimus naturally forms a rounded, controlled crown.

❄️ Winter care

  • Cold-hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.
  • A thin layer of mulch in late fall helps protect roots from temperature swings.
  • Avoid autumn pruning-fresh cuts are more vulnerable to winter stress.
