Butterfly Milkweed – Brilliant Orange Blooms for Pollinator Paradise

Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) is known for its orange flower clusters and slender green leaves. The low-maintenance flower is popular with pollinators and adds bright color to meadows, borders, and native gardens.

Vibrant Orange Blooms – Eye-catching clusters of bright orange flowers appear in early to mid-summer, creating a fiery focal point and nectar source for butterflies and bees.

Sun-Loving – Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for open meadows, garden borders, and native landscapes.

Pollinator-Friendly – A magnet for monarch butterflies and essential for their life cycle as a larval host plant.

Drought-Tolerant – Once established, it thrives in dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and low-water gardens.

Compact & Upright – Grows 18–30" tall with a tidy, bushy habit and narrow green foliage that adds texture to plantings.

Low Maintenance – Requires minimal care; deer-resistant and rarely troubled by pests or diseases.

    Plant Care Tips

Plant Care for Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)

    Watering

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish deep roots. Once established, Butterfly Milkweed is highly drought-tolerant and typically needs little supplemental watering. Deep watering during extended dry periods can enhance blooming and vigor.

    Soil Requirements

Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils. Tolerates poor, dry, and rocky soils, and adapts to a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy clay or poorly drained soil, which can cause root rot.

    Sunlight

Thrives in full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily). Too much shade will reduce flowering and plant health. Best suited for open meadows, garden beds, and sunny slopes.

    Pruning

Minimal pruning needed. Cut back dead stems in late fall or early spring. Removing spent flowers may encourage a second flush of blooms, though seed pods are valuable for wildlife.

    Fertilization

Does not require fertilization in most soils. Over-fertilizing can lead to excessive foliage and fewer blooms. A light layer of compost in spring is sufficient if needed.

    Mulching

Apply a 1–2 inch layer of organic mulch around the base in spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot.
