    Plant Care Tips

Planting & Care – Ajuga reptans ‘Black Scallop’ (Carpet Bugleweed Groundcover)

    Planting

Choose a spot with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole the size of the root ball, keeping the crown level with the soil. Backfill gently and water well after planting. For groundcover use, space Ajuga ‘Black Scallop’ plants about 12–15 inches apart to create a dense, weed-suppressing carpet over time.

    Watering

During the first growing season, water consistently to help the roots establish. Once mature, Ajuga Black Scallop groundcover becomes drought-tolerant, needing only occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils, as they can cause root problems.

    Sunlight

In full sun to partial shade, this plant grows best. In cooler areas, it performs beautifully in full sun, while in hot climates, afternoon shade helps maintain deep purple-black foliage color and overall plant health.

    Fertilizer

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or organic compost in the spring to support vigorous growth and rich foliage. Light feeding after flowering can extend the plant’s health and color throughout the season.

    Pruning & Maintenance

After flowering, trim off spent flower spikes to keep the plant looking neat and encourage continued growth. In early spring, cut back old foliage to allow fresh spring leaves to emerge. Ajuga reptans ‘Black Scallop’ is a low-maintenance, deer-resistant, evergreen groundcover that provides excellent erosion control and thrives with very little care once established.
