Plant Care Tips

☀️ Light Requirements

Provide 4 to 6 hours of direct morning sunlight paired with filtered afternoon shade. Avoid baking in midday sunlight, which can bleach the red petals. Indoors, place near a bright, sun-drenched east- or south-facing window with good ventilation.

💧 Watering Strategy

Maintain evenly moist, well-aerated soil. Azaleas have delicate fibrous root systems that suffer in bone-dry or waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly whenever the top half-inch of soil feels slightly dry, allowing all excess water to drain out completely.

🌱 Soil & Potting Mix

Use an acidic, fast-draining bonsai mix with a pH between 5.0 and 5.5. A blend of kanuma (acidic volcanic clay), composted pine bark, and pumice provides a good balance of moisture retention and aeration.

🌿 Fertilization

Apply a balanced, acidic liquid plant food or slow-release azalea fertilizer at half strength every 3 to 4 weeks from early spring through mid-summer. Cease fertilizing by late summer to let new growth mature before cold weather arrives.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

Prune and shape branches right after the main spring flowering cycle ends to encourage bushy new shoots where autumn flower buds will set. Avoid heavy pruning late in the year, as this can remove next spring’s blossoms. Protect container roots from harsh sub-freezing winds during deep winter.
