It produces dark purple muscadine grapes that are prized for fresh eating, juice, and traditional muscadine grape wine. The Cowart vine features strong, disease-resistant vines ideal for backyard gardens and small plots.

Many grape varieties struggle where muscadines thrive. Cowart varieties are adapted to warm climates and high humidity, producing heavy crops of flavorful fruit year after year. Muscadine vines are perfect for fresh grapes, homemade preserves, and winemaking.

Cowart is valued for its productivity, adaptability, and deep grape flavor. Self-fertile, this muscadine plant does not require a separate pollinator, making it ideal for small gardens. As the vine grows, it produces clusters of muscadines that ripen late in the season.

The variety is especially popular among gardeners who enjoy muscadine wine and traditional Southern grape recipes. In warm climates, muscadines grow more easily than bunch grapes.

    Plant Care Tips

    🌱 Planting Instructions

You will need a sunny area with well-drained soil and plenty of room to spread the vine. It is important to allow sufficient space for trellising, an arbor, or a fence to support muscadine grapevines as they grow quickly. Put the plant at the same level as it grew in the nursery by digging a hole twice its size.

Place the Cowart Muscadine Grape Vine upright in the hole, gently spread the roots, and backfill with native soil. Firm the soil lightly to remove air pockets, then water thoroughly to help the vine settle in and begin establishing strong roots.

    💧 Watering Tips

To promote deep root development, water consistently during the first growing season. Maintain an even moisture level in the soil without letting it become soggy. Water muscadine grapevines deeply, occasionally rather than shallowly, once they have become established and are fairly drought-tolerant.

It is important to water the vines during times of drought and hot weather in order to maintain healthy vine growth and to improve fruit quality.

    ☀️ Sunlight Requirements

Muscadine grapes thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Adequate sunlight promotes vigorous vine growth, strong flowering, and reliable fruit production. Planting in full sun also helps reduce disease pressure and improves grape flavor for fresh eating or winemaking.

    🌸 Fertilizer Tips

Feed your muscadine grapevine in early spring as new growth begins. Use a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruiting vines. Young vines benefit from light feeding during their first year, while established vines require less frequent fertilization.

Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.

    ✂️ Pruning Guide

Pruning is essential for healthy muscadine grape production. Prune the vine in late winter while it is dormant. Remove weak, damaged, or overcrowded canes and maintain a strong main structure along the trellis or support system.

Proper pruning improves air circulation, controls growth, and encourages better fruiting each season.

    ❄️ Seasonal & Winter Care

Muscadine grapevines are well adapted to warm climates and tolerate mild winters with ease. Apply mulch around the base of the vine to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

In colder areas, young vines benefit from added mulch and protection during their first winter. Once established, the Cowart Muscadine Grape Vine requires minimal winter care and will continue to grow each growing season.
