Description
Katherine Havemeyer Lilac is a classic, heirloom variety of Syringa vulgaris known for its stunning two-toned blooms. The flower clusters (panicles) are large, dense, and packed with double, star-shaped blossoms. Buds start as a rich deep lavender-purple, opening into a softer pale lilac or lavender-pink shade, creating a beautiful gradient effect on each panicle.
The blooms are highly fragrant, offering a sweet, heady scent that attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The foliage consists of broad, heart-shaped, dark green leaves that provide a lush backdrop for the striking flowers.
'Katherine Havemeyer' typically grows as a large, upright shrub, reaching about 10–12 feet tall and 8–10 feet wide, making it perfect as a specimen plant, hedge, or part of a mixed border. It blooms mid to late spring and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil.
Because of its resilience and beauty, it's a popular choice for traditional gardens and offers excellent cut flowers for floral arrangements.
