Official state fruit tree of Louisiana and mayhaw jelly is one of the two official state jellies. The trees produce spectacular blooms in early spring followed by a tart, red berry that is popular for making jelly.
The name comes from a combination of May, for the month the berries reliably become ripe, and Hawthorn After the first frost the trees leaves turn yellow and provide beautiful fall foliage.
