    Plant Care Tips

🌸 How to Plant, Grow & Care for a Minerva Althea Rose of Sharon Tree

Add a splash of royal color to your garden with the Minerva Althea Tree, also known as the Minerva Rose of Sharon Tree or
Hibiscus syriacus ‘Minerva’. This enchanting flowering tree produces stunning lavender-purple blooms with rich red centers from midsummer through fall. Its vibrant blossoms and lush green foliage create a show-stopping centerpiece in any landscape. Follow these easy steps to help your Minerva Althea Tree grow strong, bloom beautifully, and thrive for years to come.

    🌿 Planting Instructions

Choose a sunny, well-drained location for your Minerva Althea Rose of Sharon tree. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and equal in depth. Set the tree upright so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Fill the hole with loose, fertile soil and gently press down to eliminate air pockets. Water deeply after planting, and apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots.

🪴 Pro Tip: The Minerva Hibiscus Tree loves warmth and sunlight, so choose a spot with good airflow and bright light to encourage heavy blooming.

    💧 Watering Tips

During the first season, water your Minerva Althea Tree thoroughly once or twice per week. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings to promote deep root growth. Once established, it becomes quite drought-tolerant, needing only occasional watering in very dry periods. Consistent moisture during the summer ensures lush foliage and continuous purple blooms.

    ☀️ Sunlight Requirements

For the best flower color and density, plant your Minerva Rose of Sharon Tree in full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. When grown in bright sunlight, its lavender-purple flowers with deep red eyes glow brilliantly against the rich green leaves, making it a true garden showpiece.

    🌾 Fertilization Tips

Feed your Hibiscus syriacus ‘Minerva’ in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. This supports steady growth and heavy blooms. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to more leaves and fewer flowers. For a natural option, add compost or organic matter around the base each year to improve soil structure and nutrient content.

    ✂️ Pruning Guide

Prune your Minerva Althea tree in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossed branches to improve shape and airflow. Since Rose of Sharon blooms on new wood, light pruning encourages vigorous new growth and more abundant flowers while maintaining its compact, upright form for a tidy, balanced look throughout the year.

    ❄️ Winter Care

The Minerva Hibiscus Tree is hardy in USDA Zones 5–9 and tolerates most winter conditions. In colder regions, apply mulch 3–4 inches thick around the root zone in late fall to insulate the roots. Avoid pruning in late fall to prevent frost damage to fresh cuts. Come spring, your Minerva Rose of Sharon will return with lush foliage and clusters of vibrant purple blooms.
