Description

🌿 Fittonia albivenis ‘Red’ Nerve Plant

Bring a beautiful splash of color to your indoor plant collection with the Fittonia albivenis ‘Red’, commonly known as the red nerve plant or mosaic plant. This compact tropical houseplant is admired for its deep green foliage decorated with prominent red veins, creating a detailed pattern that makes every leaf visually distinctive.

With its small size and low-growing habit, this Fittonia plant is especially well suited to desktops, shelves, terrariums, plant displays, and other cozy indoor spaces. Its colorful foliage adds texture and contrast without taking up much room.

The plant reaches approximately 4–8 inches in mature height and 8–12 inches in width, making it a practical choice for smaller indoor areas. It has a moderate growth rate and performs best in bright, indirect light with consistently moist soil and higher humidity.

🌱 Key Features

🌿 Striking Red Veins: Deep green leaves are highlighted by vivid red vein patterns.

❤️ Compact Growth: A low-growing plant that fits beautifully on desks, shelves, and small plant stands.

🏡 Indoor Tropical Houseplant: Naturally suited to warm indoor environments.

💧 Humidity Loving: Performs particularly well in humid rooms and enclosed terrarium environments.

🌤️ Bright Indirect Light: Prefers filtered brightness rather than harsh direct sunlight.

🪴 Terrarium Friendly: Its compact form makes it an excellent choice for a Fittonia terrarium.

🌱 Beginner-Friendly: With consistent moisture, suitable lighting, and humidity, it can be an approachable plant for new indoor gardeners.

The product listing identifies its botanical name as Fittonia albivenis and describes it as an indoor tropical houseplant with colorful veined foliage.

❤️ Why Choose a Red Nerve Plant?

The beauty of a nerve plant comes from its intricate leaf pattern. Unlike ordinary green houseplants, Fittonia offers a naturally decorative appearance through its contrasting veins.

The red-veined form creates a particularly bold display against its deep green leaves. It can be used as a standalone accent or combined with other indoor plants to create a layered foliage collection.

Its compact size also makes it useful when floor space is limited. Place it on a work desk, bookshelf, side table, plant shelf, or terrarium arrangement to introduce a touch of tropical character.

Plant Care Tips

🪴 Planting Fittonia

Choose a container with drainage holes and use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix. Plant the Fittonia albivenis at the same depth as it was growing in its original container.

After planting, water thoroughly so the roots can settle. Avoid compacting the soil too firmly because healthy roots benefit from good airflow within the growing medium.

🌤️ Light Requirements

The nerve plant grows best in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where the plant receives plenty of filtered brightness without being exposed to intense direct sunlight.

Direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves and may cause fading or browning. If the foliage becomes stretched or loses its vibrant appearance, consider moving the plant closer to a brighter indirect-light source.

💧 Watering

Consistent moisture is one of the most important parts of fittonia care. Keep the soil evenly moist, but never leave the plant sitting in standing water.

Check the soil regularly and water when the upper surface begins to dry. Avoid allowing the root zone to become completely dry for extended periods.

Fittonias can wilt noticeably when they become too dry, but consistent watering helps maintain healthy, attractive foliage.

💦 Humidity

High humidity is particularly beneficial for Fittonia plant care. The plant naturally prefers humid tropical conditions and can perform well in bathrooms, humid rooms, or terrariums when lighting is appropriate.

If your indoor air is dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant near other humidity-loving plants. Avoid placing it directly beside strong heating or cooling vents.

🌾 Soil & Fertilizer

Use a fertile, well-draining indoor potting mix that retains moderate moisture without becoming waterlogged.

During active growth, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to the product label. Avoid overfertilizing, as excessive nutrients can stress the plant and affect its delicate foliage.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

Regular light trimming can help maintain a compact, bushier appearance. Remove damaged or yellowing leaves with clean scissors.

If stems become long or sparse, pinch the growing tips to encourage branching and a fuller shape. Avoid heavy pruning when the plant is stressed from dryness, temperature changes, or other growing problems.

🪴 Repotting

Repot your Fittonia when roots begin filling the container or when the plant has outgrown its current pot. Move it into a container only slightly larger than the existing one.

Use fresh, well-draining soil and water thoroughly after repotting. Keep the plant in bright indirect light while it adjusts.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep your Fittonia in a warm indoor environment away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. As a tropical plant, it performs best under stable, comfortable indoor temperatures.
