Plant Care Tips

🌿 Planting

Choose a spot with partial sun to light shade, especially in warmer climates to protect the foliage.
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and set the
tree at the same depth as the nursery pot. Backfill gently, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around
(but not touching) the trunk.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once mature,
water deeply when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, as Japanese maples dislike soggy conditions.

🌸 Fertilizing

Feed lightly in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer designed for trees or acid-loving plants.
Do not over-fertilize — too much feeding can burn delicate roots and reduce foliage quality.

🍂 Mulching

Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the root zone to retain moisture and protect shallow roots.
Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot and improve airflow.

✂️ Pruning

Prune lightly in late winter or mid-summer to shape the tree and remove any damaged, crossing, or weak branches.
Avoid heavy pruning, as the natural weeping shape of Tamukeyama is its most attractive feature.

☀️ Sunlight Needs

Thrives in morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler regions, it tolerates full sun; in hot areas, shade
during the hottest hours helps prevent leaf scorch.
