    Plant Care Tips

🌸 How to Plant, Grow & Care for a Purple Althea Tree (Rose of Sharon – Purple Single Blooms)

Add rich, garden-defining color to your landscape with the Purple Althea Tree, also known as the Purple Rose of Sharon or Hibiscus syriacus ‘Purple’. This beautiful tree-form hibiscus is known for its deep purple single blooms that appear from midsummer through early fall. The vivid flowers stand out beautifully against fresh green foliage, creating bold contrast and long-lasting seasonal interest.

With its upright form, dependable blooming, and low-maintenance nature, the Purple Althea Tree fits easily into front yards, walkways, garden borders, butterfly gardens, and outdoor seating areas. It delivers vibrant color without demanding constant care—making it ideal for both new and experienced gardeners.

    🌿 Planting Instructions

Choose a full-sun location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball. Set the Purple Rose of Sharon Tree so the root flare is level with the soil surface. Backfill with native soil and gently firm it in place. Water thoroughly after planting, then apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to retain moisture.

Tip: Good air circulation encourages heavier blooming and keeps foliage healthy.

    💧 Watering Tips

Water deeply 1–2 times per week during the first growing season. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Hibiscus syriacus ‘Purple’ becomes mildly drought tolerant, though consistent moisture during hot periods promotes better flowering.

    ☀️ Sunlight Requirements

The Purple Althea Tree performs best in full sun. More sunlight results in stronger growth, richer flower color, and heavier blooming. It will tolerate light to partial shade, but flowering may be reduced.

    🌾 Fertilization Tips

Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or improve soil naturally with compost. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

    ✂️ Pruning Guide

Lightly shape the canopy and remove crossing or damaged branches. Because Purple Althea blooms on new wood, pruning supports vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

    ❄️ Winter Care

Hardy in USDA Zones 5–9, the Purple Rose of Sharon Tree tolerates winter conditions well. In colder regions, apply mulch around the base for added root protection. Avoid late-season pruning to prevent cold damage to fresh cuts.
