    Plant Care Tips

🌸 How to Plant, Grow & Care for a Variegated Lucy Red Althea Tree

The Variegated Lucy Red Althea Tree is an eye-catching landscape plant known for its double red-pink blossoms and creamy variegated foliage. Also called Variegated Lucy Rose of Sharon or Hibiscus syriacus ‘Lucy’ (Variegated), this variety stands out even before it flowers, thanks to its decorative leaf edges. When in bloom, it provides warm, cheerful color that continues through the summer season. Because it’s naturally hardy and adaptable, it’s an excellent choice for front yards, landscaping, cottage garden borders, and patio areas.

With its clean tree form and rounded canopy, the Variegated Lucy Althea adds structure and softness at the same time - without requiring challenging upkeep.

    🌿 Planting instructions:

Choose a spot in full sun and soil that drains well. Make sure the hole is slightly bigger than the root ball. Place the root flare level with the soil surface (do not bury it). Refill with the same soil you removed and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Finish with 2-3 inches of mulch to hold moisture and regulate soil temperature.

    🪴 Pro tip:

This plant shows its bright leaf edges and best bloom color when grown in full sun.

    💧 Watering tips

Water deeply during the first growing season to help the root system establish.
After that, the Variegated Lucy Althea Tree is moderately drought-tolerant, only needing consistent watering during long, hot periods to support continuous flowering.

    ☀️ Sunlight requirements

Full sun (6+ hours daily) is ideal.
More sun = stronger variegation + more flower buds.
It will tolerate light afternoon shade but may bloom less.

    🌾 Fertilization tips

Apply slow-release, balanced fertilizer or compost once in the early spring.
Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding - this encourages leaf growth instead of blooming.

    ✂️ Pruning Guide

It is best to prune late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Remove any thin, crossed, or winter-damaged branches.
Shaping is optional; this plant keeps a naturally tidy tree canopy.

    ❄️ Winter care

    Hardy in USDA Zones 5-9.
Add a layer of mulch in late fall for root protection, especially in colder climates.
Avoid pruning in late fall - exposed cuts are more prone to winter injury.
