    Plant Care Tips

    📍 Plant Location

Vinca minor ‘Illumination’ grows best in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate morning sun. Shaded locations help preserve golden variegation and prevent leaf scorching. Ideal for planting under trees, along walkways, slopes, and at shaded borders.

    🌱 Soil Requirements

This lesser periwinkle prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture. It adapts well to most garden soils, including loam and clay, as long as drainage is good. Adding compost at planting helps establish strong roots and supports healthy groundcover spread.

    🪴 Planting Method

Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and just deep enough so the plant sits level with the soil surface. Space plants 8–12 inches apart for faster ground coverage. Backfill gently, press soil firmly, and water thoroughly after planting.

Mulching lightly around plants helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

    💧 Watering Needs

Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once mature, Vinca minor ‘Illumination’ is drought tolerant, requiring only occasional watering during extended dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can cause root issues.

    🌸 Fertilizing

Feed lightly in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost. Heavy fertilization is unnecessary and may encourage excessive leaf growth instead of compact, tidy groundcover.

    🍃 Growth & Seasonal Care

This evergreen groundcover begins active growth in early spring, followed by violet-blue flowers 🌸. While flowering is seasonal, the gold-variegated foliage remains attractive year-round, even in mild winters.

Vinca minor spreads steadily to form a dense mat that helps control weeds.

    ✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

Maintenance is minimal. Trim back runners or edge plants in early spring to maintain their shape and control spread. Occasional thinning improves airflow and keeps the planting neat.

    ❄️ Winter Care

Vinca minor ‘Illumination’ is cold-hardy and evergreen in most regions. No winter protection is required. In colder climates, foliage may bronze slightly but will rebound with fresh growth in spring.
