Plant Care Tips

🌱 Planting

Choose a sunny to lightly shaded area with loose, well-draining soil. Dig a wide planting hole so the roots can spread naturally, and set the Wax Myrtle at the same depth as it was in its nursery pot. Refill gently, water well to settle the soil, and apply mulch around the root zone—keeping the mulch a few inches away from the trunk for airflow.

💧 Watering

Young Wax Myrtle plants need steady moisture as they establish. After the first season, water deeply whenever the soil feels dry a few inches down. This shrub tolerates short dry spells but performs best with consistent, moderate moisture—avoid waterlogged soil.

🌿 Fertilizing

Feed your Wax Myrtle lightly in early spring using a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. It doesn’t require heavy feeding; a simple seasonal application supports healthy foliage and strong growth without overstimulation.

🍂 Mulching

Spread a 2–3 inch mulch layer around the base to lock in moisture, improve soil quality, and suppress weeds. Pine straw, bark chips, or shredded wood all work well. Be sure to keep mulch slightly away from the main stem to prevent rot.

✂️ Pruning

Trim Wax Myrtle in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and density. Remove leggy or weak branches and lightly shape the plant into a hedge or natural screen. This shrub responds well to pruning, making it easy to manage as it grows.

☀️ Light Requirements

Wax Myrtle grows best in full sun, though it also performs well in partial shade. More sunlight encourages thicker foliage and faster growth, especially when planted as a privacy hedge.

❄️ Winter Care

In colder regions, young plants may benefit from a light winter mulch layer to protect the roots. Mature Wax Myrtle shrubs are generally hardy and handle winter conditions well once fully established.
