Plant Care Tips

🌸 Purple Althea Tree – Planting & Care Guide

🌱 How To Plant?

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil for your Purple Althea Tree (Hibiscus syriacus ‘Purple Althea’). Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball to allow the roots room to spread. Set the tree so that the root ball sits level with the surrounding ground. Fill the hole with enriched garden soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots establish.

For best results, space multiple trees about 5–8 feet apart to ensure proper air circulation and room for mature growth and abundant flowering. 🌿

💧 Water Needs

During the first growing season, water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist—but never waterlogged or bone dry. Once established, the Purple Althea Tree becomes moderately drought-tolerant. Water only when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry, and always ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

☀️ Sunlight Requirements

Provide your Purple Althea Tree with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for the best bloom performance. Full sun encourages fuller, more vibrant purple flowers. Although it tolerates partial shade, reduced sunlight may lead to fewer and paler blooms.

🌿 Fertilizing

Beginning the second spring after planting, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as 10-10-10 early in the growing season. Feed lightly—excess fertilizer can cause lush foliage growth at the expense of flowers. 🌸

✂️ Pruning Tips

Prune your Purple Althea Tree in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, weak, or damaged branches to maintain a healthy shape and strong framework. Light annual pruning promotes better flowering and helps keep the shrub neat and well-balanced. ✂️🌿
