    Plant Care Tips

    🌱 Planting Instructions

Black Gum trees grow best in full sun to partial shade with rich, moist, well-drained soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and place the tree at the same depth it was growing in the container. Backfill gently, then water deeply. Spread 2–3 inches of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

    💧 Watering Tips

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the tree establish a strong root system. Mature Black Gum trees are drought-tolerant but appreciate deep watering during extremely hot periods. Keep soil consistently moist for young trees.

    ☀️ Sunlight Needs

Black Gum grows best with 6+ hours of sunlight, though it can tolerate partial shade. Full sun encourages stronger color and healthier growth.

    🌿 Fertilizer Tips

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring if needed. Avoid excessive fertilizing, as this tree grows naturally well in average soil. Do not fertilize after midsummer.

    ✂️ Pruning Guide

Prune in late winter or early spring. Remove weak, crossing, or damaged branches. Black Gum naturally forms a beautiful shape and needs minimal shaping.

    ❄️ Winter Care

Hardy in Zones 4–9, the Black Gum requires little winter care. Add mulch around young trees in extremely cold climates. Mature trees handle frost, snow, and harsh winters well.
